A Mummy is the preserved body of a dead person or animal that still has its skin. Some mummies are many thousands of years old, but have been so well preserved that we can tell what the person or animal looked like in life. Mummies can occur in accident in extremely dry, cold, or wet places, but more often people have deliberately created them, usually for religious reasons. Egyptian mummies were made to provide a home for the soul in the afterlife. The ancient Peruvians believed their mummified dead were still important family members.
